I don’t know if we can call the All-Star game a “game,” this year, but it is most definitely a competition, one that writers and players have both shown disproval for.
Whether you think the new format is a joke or not, being named an NBA All-Star is most definitely not. It’s not the pro-bowl, where backup quarterbacks can make it (Yes, you read that right). Being an All-Star is what great players do time and time again. It’s also something that helps many players get paid, as many have stipulations in their contracts that increase their salaries if they make it.
With only 12 players being selected from each conference, just 24 (excluding the usual injury replacements) in a league with more than 450 players get to say they were an All-Star. While we get caught up in his title and MVP count, Durant is tied for the fifth-most All-Star appearances ever with 14. Another one would have him tied with Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan, and Shaquille O’Neal…elite company to say the least.
Booker is tied with Karl-Anthony Towns for the most appearances by any player in his draft class. With Towns likely to be an All-Star again this year, the Valley’s franchise cornerstone will need another appearance to stay tied for first.
Whether you want to vote for Booker or Durant, feel like Bradley Beal deserves some love, or even think Tyus Jones or Royce O’Neale deserves a nod, you can vote for your favorite Suns’ to be an All-Star this season on NBA.com.
