Hey, they’re changing it up! Again!
Do you watch the NBA All-Star Game? I do, especially when players from the Phoenix Suns are involved. But, like most fans, I often come away with more criticism than awe. Maybe I enjoyed it more when I was younger when everything seemed to shine a little brighter. After all, I believed in Santa Claus back then too.
The NBA All-Star Game has long been criticized as a defense-optional showcase of flashy scoring and high-octane finishes. In the era of the three-point revolution, it has evolved into an event where players routinely take half-court shots, further diluting the product. Once a must-watch spectacle that drew 10.8 million viewers, its audience has dwindled to nearly half that number, with just 5.5 million tuning in last year.
As the NBA fights to keep the All-Star Game relevant, it scrambles each season to breathe new life into what was once a marquee midseason event. The ideas they come up with are almost laughable, leaving me unsure whether they’re trying to make the game more engaging for the players or the fans tuning in each February.
“Let’s do team captains!” “Who cares about conferences?” “Okay, hear me out. A ‘The Final Target Score’…” Great call, Chad.
Think tanks are constantly searching for ways to make the All-Star Game more engaging, and this year they’re at it again for the February 16 showcase in San Francisco. Once more, they’ve attempted to reinvent the wheel, banking on the idea that adding layers of complexity to the game’s format will somehow boost viewership.

How is the All-Star Game changing this time? Here’s a breakdown of the new format:
Semifinal Matches:
- The All-Star Game will feature two semifinal matches, each played to a target score of 40 points.
Final Showdown:
- The winners of the semifinal games will advance to a final matchup, which will be played up to 25 points.
Team Composition:
- Official details about how the teams will be formed have not been confirmed. It’s expected that three of the teams will consist of eight players each. The fourth team is anticipated to be the winner of the Rising Stars Game, adding a competitive twist to the format.
So now it’s potentially four teams with eight players each. You know, like every time you go and play pickup basketball down at the park. Three subs, right? GTFOH. It’s not the “All-Star Game”, it’s the “All-Star Games”.
The NBA is striving to be revolutionary, something we’ve all admired at some point. But in reality, it’s only making things more confusing. Take the In-Season Tournament (or the Emirates NBA Cup, or whatever the hell they decide to call it next year). Beneath all the flashy courts, group play, knockout rounds, and trips to Vegas lies one glaring problem: it doesn’t matter. Like, at all. Yet it’s wrapped in layers of confusion, with brackets, point differentials, and convoluted rules that only add to the chaos.
Guess what? The All-Star Game doesn’t mean diddly squat either. But again, they are making it confusing for fans, and players probably still won’t give a shit. Some still don’t even know how the NBA Cup works. ThIs WoN’t BaCkFiRe.
I don’t have the solution to “fix” it. Get rid of the three-point line? Maybe the NBA should lean into something that resonates with the few who still care enough to watch: nostalgia. Show me Jordan. Gimme Chuck. Imagine a game of HORSE between the two. Must. See. TV.
The All-Star Game is a chance to celebrate the legends who shaped the sport. The game itself, with players showing little genuine effort, has ceased to be the centerpiece. So why keep trying to force it into that role? The selection process is better than the game, at the end of the day, that’s all that matters. The little gray bar on Basketball Reference.
I’ll still tune in because I love basketball. Not for the format. Not for whatever convoluted gimmicks they’ve dreamed up this year. Maybe just to check out the uniforms. And hopefully a couple of Suns.
