Kevin Durant didn’t just help the United States defeat Brazil in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Olympics, he made history.
Durant officially became Team USA’s all-time leading scorer this Tuesday. That record was previously owned by the great Lisa Leslie (488 points).
On Tuesday night, Durant shared a heartfelt message about becoming the new record-holder for Team USA.
“Records are meant to be broken, I’ll hold on to this until another great comes along and passes me up,” Durant wrote on social media. “…Lisa Leslie you are the gold standard in basketball, I appreciate your love and support throughout the years..much love to you always…it’s all about the gold baby. Let’s get it fellas.”
Durant already received a congratulatory message from Leslie, who won gold medals with Team USA in 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008.
“Congratulations @KDTrey5 I’m honored to have you break my @TeamUSA Olympic record!!! Our dedication to our country is evident and etched in stone,” Leslie tweeted. “Now go get another Gold medal my friend! One Team, One Goal, Gold!”
Durant will have at least one more opportunity to create some distance between him and the rest of the players on the all-time scoring list.
The United States will return to the hardwood Thursday to face Serbia. That matchup will take place at 3 p.m. ET.
