It’s a sad day for the Phoenix Suns family.
On Saturday, the team shared that legendary radio play-by-play announcer and Ring of Honor member Al McCoy passed away at the age of 91.
McCoy was the longest tenured team broadcaster in NBA history, serving 51 seasons as the voice of Suns basketball from 1972-2023. He was on the call for all three of Phoenix’s Finals appearances and lent his distinctive voice to countless incredible moments throughout the franchise’s history.
McCoy lost his wife Georgia in 2012 but is survived by his three sons, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
“As a father, he taught us the value of respect, loyalty, hard work, and love – both on and off the court,” the McCoy Family said of his passing. “His passion, dedication and kindness touched countless lives, and while he may be gone, the impact he made will be felt for generations to come.”
Several key figures of the Suns organization also shared statements on McCoy’s death. Including owner Mat Ishbia, Devin Booker and former Suns greats Steve Nash and Charles Barkley.
“From his first call in 1972 to his last in 2023, Al McCoy was there for every defining moment in our history. He was the heartbeat of our organization, a cherished friend, a mentor to many and a legend whose voice brought countless unforgettable moments to life for generations of Suns fans,” Ishbia said.
“We are heartbroken by the passing of our beloved Al, the voice of the Phoenix Suns for over five decades. Our thoughts go out to Al’s family, friends and to our entire Suns community.”
It’s an unfortunate loss for those in the NBA community but fans can take solace in knowing just how loved and appreciated his work was for the better part of half a century.
May he rest in peace.
