Former NBA star Shawn Marion hit back at Kevin Durant’s “cocky” and “arrogant” comments regarding the United States’ superiority over other basketball nations. Durant, the US’ all-time leading scorer, told a podcast recently that rivals “can’t compete”. -via SCMP / January 26, 2025
However, speaking exclusively to the Post at the NBA Lunar New Year celebration event in Hong Kong, league ambassador Marion dismissed the comments, citing the fact the recent best player awards have been won by non-Americans. “Basketball is such a global sport and is growing continuously, the crazy thing is, the last six MVPs [Most Valuable Players] have not been Americans,” he said. “So think about what you’re just saying. I think it’s going to be another foreign MVP this year. Kevin Durant is one of the most skilled players, I got so much love and respect for him, but of course, that saying was very cocky, very arrogant.” -via SCMP / January 26, 2025

The second game in TNT’s Thursday night NBA doubleheader featured the Houston Rockets against the Memphis Grizzlies. Memphis, though was shorthanded, which was news to Shaquille O’Neal on Inside the NBA. Discussing the game, O’Neal said that he was “looking forward to the Ja Morant-Jalen Green matchup,” but soon found out that he wouldn’t get to see those two share the court. “Well, Ja Morant’s out tonight,” host Ernie Johnson replied. “OK, so Ja Morant’s out. So forget that,” O’Neal said, as everyone else at the desk began to laugh. -via Awful Announcing / January 31, 2025
Sabonis is averaging a career-high 20.9 points, a career-high 14.5 rebounds and 6.6 assists while shooting 61% from the field and 48.1% from 3-point range. He leads the league in rebounding and double-doubles (42). He ranks third in triple-doubles (8), trailing only Nikola Jokic (21) and LeBron James (9). “Can I throw another name out there that I’m surprised we didn’t hear? Domantas Sabonis,” Johnson said. O’Neal: “Oh yeah.” Barkley: “Yeah.” Smith: “I think they started so slow, Ernie. That might have hurt his chances.” Johnson: “Possibly. I mean, look, he leads the league in rebounding. He’s second in 3-point percentage. He leads the league in double-doubles with 42. He’s had 42 out of the 44 games he’s played.” O’Neal: “That’s an All-Star right there.” -via Sacramento Bee / January 31, 2025
