The Phoenix Suns are set to acquire forward E.J. Liddell from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for forward David Roddy. However, Liddell’s time in Phoenix may not be a long one.
The Suns are expected to waive Liddell after acquiring him. In part, this is to create the regular season roster spot to sign Tyus Jones, who recently agreed to a one-year deal with Phoenix.
If the Suns choose, they could waive and stretch Liddell’s dead money across three seasons, at approximately $700,000 per season. That would save Phoenix considerable money towards their luxury tax bill. If the Suns don’t want to take dead money on in future season, they could eat the entirety of Liddell’s $2.1 million salary this season.
