Time is running out for the Suns to make an easy win of an offseason move.
The season is winding to a close for the Phoenix Suns, and with no postseason in sight, optimism is in short supply. What remains are looming decisions, ones that won’t just shape the offseason, but could define the identity of this franchise for the next decade.
But amid all those weighty decisions looming over the franchise, one small but puzzling situation remains unresolved. And time is quickly running out.
Collin Gillespie. The Villanova guard has injected life into the Suns with his hustle, grit, confidence, and reliable three-point stroke. After impressing with the Valley Suns, he’s carried that momentum to the big league squad, quietly putting together a strong stat line and making the most of his opportunity.
The 25-year-old point guard has appeared in 31 games for the Suns, earning eight starts and making the most of his minutes. He’s averaging 5.5 points, 2.4 assists, 2.2 rebounds, and just 0.5 turnovers per game. It’s an efficient stat line for a player still carving out his NBA role. Even more impressive, he’s shooting a blistering 44% from three.
While Gillespie isn’t a franchise cornerstone, he’s shown enough to suggest he could be a dependable rotation player and a valuable depth piece on any roster—including Phoenix’s.
The Suns have until Sunday to lock him into a long-term deal, a move that could offer a rare bright spot in an otherwise bleak season. But so far, there’s been no indication that those discussions have even started.
“I have not had any conversations,” Gillespie informed PHNX’s Gerald Bourguet after practice earlier today. “It’ll probably be something I have with my agents towards the end of the year after these last 2 games, but I love Phoenix. I would love to be here if they’ll have me back.”

If no contract is signed before the end of the season, Gillespie will enter the offseason as a restricted free agent, opening the door for other teams to make a run at him.
Any interest from around the league would naturally drive up his price tag, potentially putting the Suns in a more expensive and competitive position. But they have an opportunity now. By signing him before the deadline, they could lock in a team-friendly deal and secure a reliable, cost-effective contributor for the next few years.
It’s a small move in the grand scheme, but one that could offer real value.
