The Phoenix Suns coaching carousel spins again after Budenholzer firing.
After a disappointing 36-46 record, coaching a roster that now holds the distinction of being the highest-costing in NBA history, and grappling with rumors of team disconnection and struggles to adjust, the Suns have officially parted ways with Mike Budenholzer.
It’s over. Again.

The Phoenix Suns are once more at a crossroads, forced to begin the search for another head coach after deciding to part ways with Budenholzer. Much like Frank Vogel before him, Budenholzer’s tenure lasted less than a full calendar year. Budenholzer, who became the 22nd head coach in Suns’ history, now joins an unfortunate list as the 9th coach to last just one year with the franchise. He is the fourth in the last five head coaches to meet the same fate.
This abrupt shift is a sobering reminder of the franchise’s ongoing instability, highlighting a pattern of dysfunction that continues to plague the team, no matter how much talent is on the floor.
It was last May when Mike Budenholzer arrived in Phoenix, introduced by the legendary Al McCoy at his inaugural press conference. His message struck a chord with Suns fans, particularly when he addressed the team’s glaring need for a point guard, an issue that had plagued the 2023-24 Suns with ball security and playmaking woes.
After an offseason where the front office appeared to make moves that could cater to Budenholzer’s strengths, including assembling a roster that seemed tailor-made for his style, the Suns kicked off the season with an 8-1 record.
But then, as with so many narratives in Phoenix, the wheels began to slowly fall off.
Budenholzer, an offensively-minded coach with a penchant for the three-point game, was tasked with coaching a team that, at its core, thrives in the midrange. The adjustment wasn’t immediate. It took time for the offense to find a rhythm, and more importantly, it took time for Budenholzer to adjust to a roster that didn’t align perfectly with his system. The growing pains were evident, and the team’s inconsistency was all too familiar.
Defensively, the Suns were nothing short of a dumpster fire this season. The players seem consistently disconnected, as if they’re a step behind or not in sync with one another. Energy levels fluctuate wildly, with entire stretches where the defense looks like it’s been forgotten altogether.
While individual effort certainly plays a role, the responsibility for schemes, game plans, and adjustments falls squarely on the shoulders of the coach. And in this department, Budenholzer has struggled to get the most out of his players.
Perhaps the most glaring example of this disconnect came from Jusuf Nurkic, who voiced frustrations about the lack of communication and the absence of a meaningful relationship between himself and Budenholzer. This revelation was one of the first cracks in the foundation of the Suns’ season, shedding light on the growing dysfunction within the team.

Then, Devin Booker, the franchise’s centerpiece, added fuel to the fire with his comments about the team’s lack of communication. His frustration was palpable, as he highlighted the breakdown in dialogue as a key issue.
Further compounding the problem, reports surfaced that Booker’s attempts at leadership — his voice, his accountability — were actively being suppressed.

The team’s failure to foster a healthy, open communication culture not only reflected poorly on the players but on the coaching staff as well, as it became clear that Budenholzer’s inability to navigate these challenges was a major contributing factor to the unraveling of the Suns’ season.
Reports soon surfaced that working with Mike Budenholzer behind the scenes was proving to be a difficult experience for several players and staff members. The lack of clear communication, coupled with a sense of disconnect between the head coach and his players, created a tense atmosphere that only worsened as the season wore on. Budenholzer’s rigid approach to certain aspects of the game, paired with his failure to adapt to the team’s strengths and weaknesses (cough…Ryan Dunn…cough), made it increasingly challenging for players to feel supported.

The once-promising collaboration began to feel like a series of missteps, with frustrations mounting both on and off the court. The reports painted a picture of a coach who struggled to find common ground with his roster, ultimately leading to a breakdown in trust and a sense of disillusionment within the organization.
So Bud is out. Now what?
This shift represents yet another chapter in the Suns’ ongoing struggle to find stability at the helm, as the organization now faces the daunting task of repairing a reputation marred by the firing of three head coaches in as many seasons. In the midst of this turmoil, the Suns must also navigate the complex future of key players like Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, and potentially Devin Booker, as the offseason looms.
The damage, however, has already been done.
The fractures within the team and front office are visible, and the once-promising season was derailed by internal struggles. It is now up to Suns owner Mat Ishbia to step in and chart a course forward. He must not only find a new head coach capable of uniting the team but also manage the delicate balance of rebuilding trust within the locker room and across the franchise.
With a pivotal offseason ahead, the Suns’ future hinges on Ishbia’s ability to steer the ship through these turbulent waters and reestablish the franchise’s credibility.
