After Media Day, I couldn’t help but look around the league and wonder: Have these Western Conference teams improved, and are any of them better than the Suns?
Mat Ishbia brought fire and passion to the Valley as Media Day marked the kickoff of the Phoenix Suns’ 2024-25 season. The atmosphere was electric, with Ishbia setting the tone for the day. As discussions unfolded, the voices within the Suns’ roster began to deepen, reflecting the anticipation and excitement for the upcoming season. From the owner to the general manager, coach, and players, Suns Media Day had a laid-back vibe, creating a sense of unity that felt like the calm before the storm.
This year, there’s another layer of expectation as the Suns aim for a championship run. Higher than last year. With new additions to the roster and a commitment to improving team chemistry, the focus was not just on individual performances but also on building a cohesive unit. As players shared their thoughts and goals for the season, it became clear that everyone was on the same page, ready to embrace the challenges ahead.
The combination of Ishbia’s enthusiasm and the team’s determination sets the stage for what could be an exciting and pivotal season for the Suns.
After NBA Media Day around the league, several teams caught my eye out West. Teams are unfazed by the Suns’ high expectations and are focused on their own championship pursuits. These teams have built strong chemistry and camaraderie, and with the right additions, they could have the Suns sweating as they try to stop them.
There are two teams that may give the Suns more problems than we think, and they might not be high on your list.
Memphis Grizzlies
This picture alone gave me chills.

My pick to win it all this year is the Grizzlies. With Ja Morant healthy, they’ll be just as dominant as the Boston Celtics throughout the season. They’re a team that will strike fear into the Los Angeles Lakers, who might find themselves scrambling to avoid facing them in the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs while fighting for the 7th or 8th seed.
Beyond Morant, the Grizzlies have a young and dynamic roster that’s developed incredible chemistry over the past few seasons. Jaren Jackson Jr., coming off his Defensive Player of the Year campaign, anchors a defense that can lock down any opponent, while Desmond Bane continues to evolve into one of the league’s most lethal shooters. The addition of a veteran presence like Marcus Smart only enhances their versatility and toughness, giving them the edge they need to challenge for a title.
What makes Memphis especially dangerous is its hunger. After falling short in previous playoff runs, the Grizzlies are a team with a chip on their shoulder. They’ve tasted success but are eager for more, and their combination of youth, talent, and intensity will make them the team to beat in the West this season.
Does this team scare you, or is the next one even more intimidating?
Sacramento Kings
This picture didn’t give me the chills but I did take a second look…

The Kings are ready to rebound after a disappointing season last year. With improved chemistry, a streaky offense, and the key addition of DeMar DeRozan, the question remains: do they have enough to climb back to the top of the Western Conference standings?
DeRozan brings veteran leadership and reliable scoring to a young, talented Kings roster. His mid-range game will complement De’Aaron Fox’s explosiveness, while Domantas Sabonis continues to be a versatile force in the paint. The challenge will be maintaining consistency, especially with a streaky offense that can go cold at times. If they can find a balance between fast-paced play and efficient half-court sets, they’ll be tough to stop.
Another factor to watch is the Kings’ defense, which was a weak spot last season. While they’ve made strides, they’ll need a more disciplined approach on that end of the floor if they want to contend in a stacked Western Conference. If Sacramento can tighten up defensively and stay healthy, they have a legitimate shot at reestablishing themselves as a playoff threat.
Ultimately, the Kings’ success will depend on whether they can keep their chemistry intact and elevate their game against elite teams. With the addition of DeRozan, the pieces are there—but they’ll need to execute consistently if they want to make a deep playoff run.
After Monday’s Media Day, what other Western Conference teams do you think we might be overlooking?
