The NFL had one of its important offseason dates come on Tuesday, triggering a new phase in the offseason leading up to the March 12 new league year. On Tuesday, Feb. 18, the window opened that allows teams to use either the franchise or transition tag on one player set to become a free agent, either a player whose contract expires with the beginning of the new league year or a player whose deal voids during the tagging window.
The tags allow teams an additional negotiating window to retain a free agent.
Teams have until March 4 at 4 p.m. ET to exercise one of the tags.
Here is what there is to know about the different tags.
