Marvin Harrison Jr. has hit the ground running, but Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon wants his rookie wide receiver to slow down a bit.
Per PHNX Cardinals, Gannon discussed tempering Harrison’s self-imposed intense workload this summer.
“He’s extremely detailed. He does a lot of extra [work], probably too much,” Gannon said. “I’m gonna be fighting him about that.”
Expanding on that thought, Gannon said the team carefully orchestrates the offseason schedule. While it hasn’t been an issue for Harrison, he’s worried about a player “dragging” at practice if they run too many extra routes on their own time.
“I love extra work, but you’ve got to be smart about it,” Gannon explained. “You’ve just got to have a routine about what you’re doing. You only get one cup a day. How are you filling your cup? If you’re overflowing it somewhere, it’s going to take from somewhere else.”
Gannon nevertheless said that Harrison is doing a “good job” with his offseason planning. Besides, it’s hard to think of a better concern to have about a rookie.
The 21-year-old sounds eager to make an immediate impact in Arizona. Drafted with the No. 4 pick out of Ohio State, Harrison has all the makings of a future NFL star.
Gannon may want Harrison to take a breather more often, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said the prospect’s work ethic and professionalism cemented him as Arizona’s first-round choice. Expectations are sky-high for the Hall of Fame wideout’s son.
“The early returns from the Cardinals are, Marvin Harrison is going to be awesome,” Rapoport said. “And I can say that with all the confidence. He has been very, very good.”
