Chase Edmonds, Miami Dolphins, Agree To Contract
Chase Edmonds entered the 2021 season as the starting running back for the Cardinals, stepping up after years as a backup. Edmonds formed a complimentary tandem with fellow free-agent back James Conner early in the year. The win over the Los Angeles Rams was a high watermark for the pair. Unfortunately, while Edmonds showed promise, he struggled to find consistency, and mid-season injuries limited his, and Arizona’s, offensive output. After he ceded the starting role, Edmonds paled in comparison to Conner, who was arguably Arizona’s brightest star in 2021. However, Edmonds did finish as one of only five running backs who averaged over 5.0 yards per carry in 2021.
Edmonds’ ascension to eventual Cardinals starter was a long time coming after he stepped into the role once the team moved on from 2020 starter Kenyan Drake. Edmonds was previously also a backup to former starter David Johnson. Despite having played a bit role for the first three years of his career, Edmonds racked up some impressive stats. He ranked second only to Derrick Henry amongst running backs for rushes over 20 yards since 2019. A Week 7 performance against the New York Giants in 2019 saw Edmonds score touchdowns on three such runs, and he became only the sixth player in NFL history to do so in a single game.
Edmonds was a fourth-round selection for the Cardinals in 2018 after an impressive career at Fordham. Despite receiving little FBS attention out of high school due to his size, Edmonds’ freshman year saw him earn the Jerry Rice Award and NCAA FCS Rookie of the Year. He finished his college career ranked fifth all-time in NCAA FCS history for rushing yards with 5,862 yards over four years.
