Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is under contract through the 2028 season. And yet, it’s possible Arizona moves on from him next offseason.
In fact, ESPN insider Dan Graziano believes an offseason trade is the most-likely scenario for Murray in 2024.
Graziano pointed out that Arizona could struggle mightily during Murray’s absence this season. The former Heisman Trophy winner is expected to miss time due to his recovery from an ACL injury.
If things go poorly for the Cardinals, it’s possible they just play for a top pick. After all, that could net them Caleb Williams or Drake Maye.
“After Murray takes at least a little while (maybe even a long while) to come back, the Cardinals finish with one of the league’s worst records in 2023 and draft either Williams or UNC’s Drake Maye. They have to find a solution to the Murray contract problem next offseason, ideally convincing some other team to take him off their hands and help defray the dead-money cost as Arizona moves on to a future without him.”
The thought of Murray getting traded this early in his career seems wild, but the Cardinals may have no choice if they’re in position to take Williams or Maye.
Of course, Murray could shut down all these trade rumors by leading the Cardinals to several victories this fall.
