The Arizona Cardinals could target a number of positions in free agency once it begins in March. While it might not be their most glaring need, they could go after a wide receiver.
One of the biggest names on the market will be Tee Higgins, who played on the franchise tag last season, earning more than $21 million.
Some would like to see the Cardinals go out and get a guy like Higgins.
If that is going to be the case, be prepared for a huge contract. While at the Senior Bowl in Mobile last week, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler heard chatter about how much Higgins could make in a new deal.
The over/under on Bengals receiver Tee Higgins’ market is $30 million per season, and the majority of team personnel that I spoke with believe he’ll hit or clear the over. The lowest estimate I heard was somewhere slightly above DeVonta Smith’s three-year, $75 million deal. The rest saw him breaking into the $30 million range, based on his status as a No. 1-caliber receiver and the number of teams desperate for pass-catching help.
More than $30 million a year?
Higgins hasn’t played a full season since his rookie season in 2020. He did not reach 1,000 yards in 2024, although he did have a career-high 10 touchdowns.
He will want to go somewhere where he can be the top dog at receiver and make the money.
Would the Cardinals make a good fit?
Aside from what Higgins might want, he would give the Cardinals yet another tall receiver who can make contested catches like Marvin Harrison and Michael Wilson. Higgins is not particularly fast, so he is not scary in terms of taking the top off a defense.
Should we expect the Cardinals to go after Higgins? Probably not.
Between the durability and the cost, it doesn’t seem like a great fit.
