Vic Fangio consulted for the Philadelphia Eagles during their Super Bowl run this past season, and at one point it appeared he was the favorite to take over as the team’s defensive coordinator.
After the Eagles’ NFC Championship victory, then-defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon said he would return to Philly for the 2023 season. But in the coming weeks, he fielded an impermissible phone call from the Cardinals and ended up accepting their head coaching job.
During that time, Fangio accepted his current defensive coordinator position with the Miami Dolphins.
He recently suggested that he could’ve very likely ended up in Philadelphia had it not been for Gannon’s delayed switch up.
“That’s possible,” Fangio told reporters on Thursday, “but I won’t — I’ll neither confirm nor deny it.”
Fangio is originally from Dunsmore, Pennsylvania. Instead of taking a DC position with his home-state team, he’ll now look to lead the Dolphins defense to an improved season in 2023.
