The Arizona Cardinals announced the signing of linebacker Marquis Haynes this week, which came on the heels of BJ Ojulari tearing his ACL last week and being placed on injured reserve.
What is there to know about this new addition to the team?
Background
Haynes will turn 31 years old in December.
He is 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds. He was drafted in the fourth round in 2018 by the Carolins Panthers.
He played the last six seasons for them.
Stats
Over six seasons, he has played in 71 games, starting only twice. In his career, he has 14 sacks, 99 total tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 27 quarterback hits, a forced fumble, four fumble recoveries, one he returned for a touchdown.
His best season was 2022. Playing a career-high 470 defensive snaps, he had five sacks, 13 quarterback hits and seven tackles for loss.
He played in only seven games last season.
Where he fits on the Cardinals
Since Haynes has started exactly two games in six seasons, he shouldn’t be expected to replace Ojulari in the starting lineup.
Perhaps a realistic role would be a rotational guy like he has been, and if he can get five sacks in a limited role, that wouldn’t be bad.
Think of him as a more experienced Victor Dimukeje.
