Sun Devils lead the 15-team field at 8-under through 18
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico — A week removed from what coach Matt Thurmond deemed as the worst tournament he or any of his golfers have had as a Sun Devil, Arizona State is back atop the leaderboard.
Arizona State men’s golf leads at 8-under (276) after the first round of the Cabo Collegiate at the Twin Dolphin Golf Club in Mexico, edging Houston by a stroke.

Michael Mjaaseth and Josele Ballester each carded a 3-under 68, tying the lead after round one. Mjaaseth, after a double-bogey on hole 15, was able to right the ship and collect an eagle on the par-5, 593 16th hole. He logged five birdies in his opening round.
As a team, Arizona State leads the field on par-4 holes, with 4-under. Mjaaseth was 4-under on said holes while Preston Summerhays paced the field with 3-under on par-3 holes.
Ballester, the No. 16 golfer, according to WAGR, followed suit by dropping three birdies and remaining bogey free.
Arizona State does not have any golfer competing as an individual, but the individual winning of the Cabo Collegiate will receive a sponsor’s exemption for the PGA Tour’s World Wide Technology Championship, which is held in Los Cabos, Mexico, in November.
