The freshman set a new bar for the world of college golf, carding 27-under in route to a victory in only his second collegiate tournament
While Arizona State Men’s Golf set historic numbers in the Ameri Ari Invitational tournament in Hawaii, it was freshman Wenyi Ding who stole of show of the 124-player field. Ding’s 27-under tournament card was more than good enough to etch itself in college golf history books en route to securing a nine-stroke victory.
Ding joined elite company in his 27-under (63-64-62/189) 54-hole tournament victory, supplanting Jon Rahm’s record of 21-under 192 at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in 2014. He is also the only Sun Devil to submit two cards of at least 17-under (and even more impressively), doing so in his first two collegiate tournaments.

Ding went bogey free in the tournament’s opening round and submitted a nine-under 63, then followed up with an eight-under 64 during round two. Ding ignited for five straight birdies to open his third and final round on Saturday, finishing 10-under 62.
His final round 10-under 62 tied the lowest single-round score by a Sun Devil, the most recent of which came from teammate Preston Summerhays during the first round of the 2023 NCAA Las Vegas Regional.

Ding not only led the field on the score card, but finished 54 holes with 26 birdies — that’s 48 percent — a birdie on nearly every other hole. His 26 birdies were four more than the next best player.
Over the weekend, Ding went five-under on par-3 holes and 12-under on par-4 holes. He is 44-under through his first six rounds of collegiate golf.
Ding now joins LIV Golf’s David Puig (2021), Jasper Kennegard (2009), Chris Hanell (1996) and Todd Dempsey (1994) on the short list of Sun Devil’s to win the Ameri Ari Invitational.
As a team, Arizona State carded a school-best 63-under 801 (265-268-268), which earned second to North Carolina’s 68-under 796.
