TEMPE — Arizona State star running back Cam Skattebo is questionable for Saturday’s game against Kansas State, coach Kenny Dillingham said Monday.
Skattebo was held out of Arizona State’s win over UCF on Saturday with a shoulder injury.
“I think he’s gonna try to practice at least, jog through some things or run around a little bit tomorrow, so that’s a positive,” Dillingham said.
Dillingham said Skattebo wanted to play Saturday, but the coach wants to avoid any risks or possible setbacks.
“He was trying to get me to put him in the game at the middle of the third quarter … even though if he’s cleared, I want to make sure that we’re going to get the best version of Cam if he goes out there and he feels good about himself,” Dillingham said.
Sophomore Kyson Brown started at running back on Saturday with Skattebo sidelined. Brown had 73 yards from 18 carries but did not find the end zone.
Skattebo is 10th in the nation with 1,001 rushing yards in eight games played, and he is second in all-purpose yards only trailing Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty.
The Sun Devil has won Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week four times this season.
Arizona State linebacker Keyshaun Elliott also remains questionable
Arizona State linebacker Keyshaun Elliott is also questionable against Kansas State on Saturday due to a stinger suffered two weeks ago. Elliott was also ruled out for ASU’s win over UCF last week.
Dillingham said Elliott’s status is much like Skattebo’s and the team will evaluate the pair after they see how they are progressing in practice.
“Last week, when I said ‘questionable to doubtful’ none of y’all believed me, everybody’s used to people playing games,” Dillingham said. “They’re actually questionable to doubtful. Like there’s no games, they’re questionable to doubtful.
“We’ll see how the week progresses but I do feel better about both those two than I did last week but they’re still questionable like they have to go do it, feel comfortable, feel good about it, otherwise putting them out there isn’t doing them justice to themselves. It’s my job to protect them from them.”
Elliott has 45 tackles, an interception, a sack and a pass defensed this year.
The Sun Devils and Wildcats will kick off at 5 p.m. on Saturday on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app with pregame coverage from the State of the Sun Devils Podcast.
