It’s been a week and a half since the main event at UFC 264 ended in devastating fashion. In his third scrap against Dustin Poirier, Conor McGregor went down with a gruesome leg injury, forcing the fight to end early in the second round on a doctor’s stoppage.
McGregor suffered fractures in his fibula and tibia and underwent a three-hour surgery to repair the damage. He was released from the hospital last week.
The 33-year-old has maintained that he’ll be ready to get back into the Octagon as soon as he’s able, but according to Dana White, that day might be a little further away. The UFC President shared that McGregor asked to tape his ankles before the fight against Poirier because he has “chronic arthritis” in his ankles.
“It’s going to take him a year to recover from this one before he can come back … The fight game is a tough game and the kid cemented a massive legacy for himself and made a lot of money. We’ll see how the rest of his career plays out,” White told Fox News’ Jesse Watters on Sunday’s “Watters’ World.”
“He’s had ankle issues for the last couple of years. He had asked if he could tape his ankles coming into this fight and he got clearance to do it from the Nevada State Athletic Commission and then he opted not to tape them,” White continued.
“I don’t know why. He has chronic arthritis in his ankles.”

Soon after his injury, McGregor claimed that he had been hurt going into the fight. He also alleged that his doctor, the head doctor of UFC and White all knew about “stress fractures” in his leg.
“I was injured going into the fight…” McGregor said on social media. “Ask Dana White, ask the UFC, ask Dr. Davidson, the head doctor of UFC… I had stress fractures in my leg going into that cage.”
We may never get an answer on why McGregor chose not to tape his ankles. All that’s left to do is wait to see if the Irishman can recover and get back in the cage.
If he does, a rematch with Poirer sounds like it will be on the table.
