Earlier Tuesday afternoon, new Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders found himself in the midst of a controversy.
Sanders allegedly abruptly ended his appearance at SWAC Media Day because he was upset that Nick Suss of the Clarion Ledger called him “Deion.” The Hall of Fame cornerback apparently had a problem with being called by his first name.
Sanders, though, claims he never “walked out” of media days. Instead, the first time college coach suggested he “dropped the call” because of the way the reporter addressed him.
“Never walked out of media day,” he said on Twitter. “I prolonged my time to answer another question & the person thought it was cute to address me the way he did so I dropped the call & went to the next outlet. Please don’t allow a fool to fool u because then nobody would truly know who the fool is.”

During the media appearance, Deion suggested reporters wouldn’t refer to Nick Saban as “Nick.”
“You don’t call Nick Saban, ‘Nick.’ Don’t call me Deion,” Sanders told Suss. “If you call Nick [Saban], Nick, you’ll get cussed out on the spot, so don’t do that to me. Treat me like Nick.”
Unfortunately for Sanders, he’s wrong. Reporters refer to Saban by his first name all the time.
We’ll have to wait and see what Deion’s next interaction with the media is like.
