Is the “Horns Down” gesture dead? Not if you ask one of Oklahoma football’s top recruits in the 2022 cycle.
“Horns Down” has become an iconic symbol of the Oklahoma-Texas rivalry, but it won’t be found on the field too often later this fall. The Big 12’s coordinator of officiating said at the conference’s media days earlier this year that if a Sooners player gestures “Horns Down” to a Texas player, it’ll warrant a penalty. Signaling the gesture towards the crowd could even prompt a ref to throw the flag.
It’s safe to assume Oklahoma football players will avoid “Horns Down” from now on. But recruits are still engaging in the rivalry fun. Gavin Sawchuk, a four-star running back committed to the Sooners, sent the Texas Longhorns a message via Twitter on Monday. It looks like he has a good sense of what this rivalry is all about.
Take a look.

We have a feeling Gavin Sawchuk is going to be a fan-favorite in no time.
Sawchuk is a four-star running back in the 2022 cycle. He committed to Oklahoma football in late June. Experts expect the running back to play a major role for the Sooners offense in years to come.
“Well-proportioned frame with narrow build and strong lower half. Elite top-end speed and lightning-quick reflexes,” wrote Blair Angulo of 247Sports. “Explodes through running lanes and separates in open space. Lethal beyond the second level and touchdown threat from anywhere on the field.”
Sawchuk will join the Oklahoma Sooners next year ahead of the 2022 season.
