Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams were hit with devastating injury news surrounding running back Cam Akers on Tuesday. Akers has suffered a torn Achilles and will miss all of the 2021 season, as a result.
Akers was widely viewed as a potential breakout candidate this upcoming season. He ran the ball 145 times for 625 yards and two touchdowns and also added 123 receiving yards and an additional score in 2020. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to suit up for the Rams later this fall.
Los Angeles is now in a pickle. The Rams have just one proven option in Darrell Henderson and two unknowns in Xavier Howard and Jake Junk. And even though Henderson put up solid numbers in 2020, he’s no Akers.
So where will the Rams go from here? McVay told ESPN 710 on Tuesday that he’s not looking at adding a veteran back, though he has yet to rule it out.
“I don’t know that veteran route is something we’ll rule out, but it’s not something we’re looking at right now,” McVay said on ESPN 710 on Tuesday, via Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic.
Sean McVay on ESPN 710 right now: Team likes young depth and will gauge how they handle opportunities through camp and joint practices. “I don’t know that veteran route is something we’ll rule out, but it’s not something we’re looking at right now.” More on this in column.

The Los Angeles Rams are the favorite to win the NFC West this upcoming season, but the Cam Akers injury changes things.
The division is going to be an absolute slug-fest this upcoming season. Each NFC West team is capable of making a run.
The Rams, who are now without Cam Akers, appear to be comfortable moving forward with the running backs they currently have. But if they find themselves in a fight for the NFC West later on this fall, signing a veteran appears to be a plausible option.
