
Arizona has already won more on this trip to Texas than the first one.
The Wildcats used a 5-run 7th inning to rally for an 11-8 win at Rice on Wednesday night, the first of four games in five days in Houston.
The go-ahead hit came on a bases-clearing double by catcher Adonys Guzman, who had five RBI in the game including a 2-run home run in the 2nd inning.
Guzman was one of four Wildcats with at least two hits, with Brendan Summerhill and Aaron Walton having three apiece. Summerhill had a 2-run double in the 7th while Walton was 3 for 4 and also reached on a walk and a hit batter.
Arizona (5-3) won its fifth straight game after an 0-3 start, with those losses coming at the Shriners Children’s College Showdown in Arlington, Texas on opening weekend. It was outscored 31-7 in that tournament but during the win streak is averaging 10 runs per game.
The Wildcats led 4-1 but fell behind 5-4 and 7-5 before the late rally. They used six pitchers, with Garrett Hicks earning the victory with two scoreless innings of relief. Hicks struck out three batters, part of a 13-strikeout performance from the pitching staff.
Arizona returns to action Friday when it opens play in the Astros Foundation College Classic at Daikin Field, home of the Houston Astros. The Wildcats face No. 1 Texas A&M at 6 p.m. MT, with morning games Saturday against No. 18 Mississippi State and Sunday against No. 3 Tennessee.
