Arizona setter Avery Scoggins has certainly announced herself to Big 12 volleyball. On Tuesday, the conference announced that the freshman had won her third Rookie of the Week award of the season.
Scoggins had a career-high 50 assists in a four-set loss to Utah last week. That combined with 16 digs for a double-double. The digs were just three shy of her career high which was set last month against Houston.
Against BYU, she had 34 assists in a three-set loss. She also had two kills on .400 hitting.
Scoggins is fourth in the conference with 10.1 assists per set overall this season. She is one of just four setters in the Big 12 that averages double-digit assists per frame. She is fifth in the league with 9.29 assists per set against conference opponents. She has accomplished that despite playing eight ranked teams in the Wildcats’ 10 league matches.
Scoggins has been one of Arizona’s toughest servers. She is tied for fourth on the team with 0.18 aces per set. In league play, that has jumped to second at 0.24, trailing only junior outside hitter Jordan Wilson.
The freshman setter leads the team in digs per set with 2.87 against Big 12 competition. Overall, she is second with 2.72 d/s. That trails fellow freshman Carlie Cisneros, who has averaged 3.08 d/s against all opponents this season.
Scoggins is only the second Wildcat to win a conference rookie or freshman award at least three times in a season. Sofia Maldonado Diaz was Pac-12 Freshman of the Week three times in the delayed 2020 season. Maldonado Diaz won the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year award that season.
Scoggins and the Wildcats host Kansas State (8-11, 6-4) and No. 8 Kansas (20-1, 11-0) this week. Play gets started against the other Wildcats on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. MST.
