The rookie earns her second conference award this season.
It was a big week for Arizona freshman Lauryn Swann. The rookie guard got her first start and earned her second Big 12 Freshman of the Week award as the Wildcats (11-5, 2-1) went 1-1 in conference play.
Swann was the Wildcats’ leading scorer in the mid-week loss to Utah, providing one of the few bright spots in an otherwise poor outing for the team. She scored a career high 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting against the Utes. She hit six of seven 3-point shots against Utah before going 2 for 5 against UCF to bump her season average to 37.7 percent from distance. It had dropped below 30 percent headed into the week.
Swann didn’t score as much against the Knights on Saturday, but she had a more well-rounded stat line in her first start. Against Utah, her only other positive stat was one assist. Against UCF, Swann scored six points, but she also added three rebounds, two assists, and three steals. The assists tied her career high while the steals set a career high. She played 22 minutes in both games.
Swann won her first conference rookie award on Nov. 18 after Arizona defeated UNLV and Chicago State.
The native of Queens, NY averages 8.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, 0.9 assists, and 0.67 steals in 18.7 minutes per game. She has appeared in 15 of Arizona’s 16 games.
