Tommy Lloyd is running it back with USA Basketball.
The Arizona Wildcats coach has been named head coach of the USA Men’s U19 National Team ahead of the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup June 28-July 6 in Switzerland.
Lloyd will lead a staff that includes Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland and Notre Dame coach Micah Shrewsberry. McCasland and Shrewsberry were assistants under Lloyd for the 2024 U18 team that won the gold medal at the 2024 FIBA U18 AmeriCup in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
This is Lloyd’s latest go-around with USA Basketbal; He has also served a court coach for the 2022 U18 National Team training camp and has previously served as a USA Basketball committee member.
“It is always an honor to serve USA Basketball,” Lloyd said in a statement. “I have always been a fan of FIBA basketball and will embrace the opportunity to lead a very talented group of young men this summer. I look forward to working with Coach McCasland and Coach Shrewsberry again as we try to bring home gold from the World Cup.”
The U.S. has won eight gold medals at the FIBA U19 World Cup, including two of the last three (2019, 2021). The 2023 team took fourth place under Colorado coach Tad Boyle. That team featured former Arizona point guard Kylan Boswell, now at Illinois, and current Wildcats forward Tobe Awaka.
