After a breakthrough 2023-24 season that saw him earn Horizon League Player of the Year honors and lead his team to an historic upset over Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament, Oakland forward Trey Townsend entered the transfer portal. He’s now made his decision.
According to Joe Tipton of On3 Sports, Townsend has committed to the University of Arizona. Per the report, the Wildcats won the sweepstakes for Townsend over Ohio State, Louisville and Michigan.
Townsend averaged 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game this season – all career-highs. His dominance this past season helped lift the Golden Grizzlies to both the regular season and Horizon League tournament titles and into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in over a decade.
Once they got there, Townsend helped Oakland make history by stunning the 3-seeded Wildcats for their first-ever Round of 64 win.
The Golden Grizzlies nearly secured their spot in the Sweet 16 in a game against NC State, but lost in overtime. Townsend had a whopping 30 points in that game.
The Wildcats, meanwhile, have gone 88-20 in three years with Tommy Lloyd at the helm, winning two regular season titles and two conference titles and reaching the Sweet 16 twice.
If Townsend’s remarkable abilities which he showed in Oakland will follow him to Arizona, then maybe the Wildcats can go even farther next year.
