In her introductory press conference on Friday, new Arizona women’s basketball head coach Becky Burke said that she was trying to reach out to former Wildcats who are in the portal. Take one of those off the list because sophomore forward Breya Cunningham is on her way to Texas.
Cunningham will join a Longhorns team that 35-4 overall and 15-1 in the SEC last season. They advanced all the way to the Final Four before falling to South Carolina.
Cunningham was dominant when she was on the floor. Her biggest issue was staying out of foul trouble, something that plagued her both years in Tucson.
She started 64 of 66 games at Arizona. As a freshman, she was good for 7.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. She bumped that up as a sophomore, averaging 11.0 ppg on 56 percent shooting. She grabbed 7.0 rebounds.
On a per 40 minute basis, she averaged 19 points, giving a glimpse at what she is capable of. However, she averaged just 23.1 minutes on the floor due to foul trouble that often had her riding the bench. She averaged 3.6 fouls per game and 6.2 fouls per 40 minutes her sophomore season.
Cunningham was sure to be in demand with her size and flashes of greatness. She landed at one of the top programs in the country to develop all that potential.
Cunningham becomes the third player who entered the portal before Adia Barnes left to announce a destination. Jada Williams went to Iowa State. Skylar Jones is at Louisville. Four more have still not announced their next stop.
Arizona lost three more players who followed Barnes to SMU, as well as the high school players and transfers who had signed or committed to Arizona before her departure.
The roster currently consists of Montaya Dew and Buffalo transfer Lani Cornfield.
UPDATE: Former Arizona forward Ajae Yoakum announced her intention to return to her home in Portland to play for Portland State on Apr. 11. That leaves three former Wildcats in the portal who have not announced their next landing spot.
