Amid rumours, does the Ottawa Senator fanbase want to see someone like JJ Peterka added to the roster? Of course, what team wouldn’t (besides the non-playoff threat Buffalo Sabres). Sometimes the profession of sport can be a tough reality. So, let’s just recap just who exactly the Sens management has eyes on at this time of year.
JJ Peterka and More Ottawa Senators Trade Deadline Rumours
The idea is that before we can get into who’s available, who can we give up to get them? The Sens are loaded with depth and don’t want to admit because the depth are thought of us fan favourite and highly-touted prospects. Rightfully so, Drake Batherson, Claude Giroux, and David Perron have all seem to won the fanbase over. Moreover, it feels like it is difficult to offer the University of North Dakota alum Jacob Bernard-Docker or the backup goalie Anton Forsberg. Nick Cousins would also come to mind but it also seems as though general manager Steve Staios wants his players to fulfill their potential. Therefore, even though it wouldn’t be an easy decision, there are plenty of options to form excellent trade bait. We didn’t bring up Joshua Norris and Shane Pinto.
What does the Rumour Mill have Available in Return
Some of the names that are out there include Scott Laughton, Trent Frederic, Jordan Kyrou, and Brandon Tanev. The problem the Sens are forced to deal with is two-fold. First of all, their depth pieces have lacked scoring touch this year. That is one reason why Adam Gaudette‘s performance has been so inspiring for fans. Unfortunately, this has been a common theme for the past few seasons. Zack Ostapchuk is a by-product of this in some ways. It can be very difficult to be producing regularly as a young NHLer depth player, when not given power play or beyond third or fourth line ice time. Sometimes it can be a long maturation process. That seems the case for Ostapchuk this past season. He was only able to score four points in 43 games this year. But he has played a fine, physical style of play, which fits well with this group.
From the perspective of an overall team game, it seems the Sens need scoring depth. That is why some of the players mentioned. Kyrou or Peterka would be most adept at filling the scoresheet. However, they would come at a price that it is very debatable that the Sens would benefit from paying.
The Peterka discussion is very interesting. This is a player with 126 points in only 216 career NHL games, as what feels like a depth player in Buffalo. His role is even debatable at this point of his career with an average under 16 minutes a night. In contrast, the interesting connection with Ottawa Senator Tim Stutzle and being young, star German hockey players. What a top line combination it could be. The prospects of it are, if nothing else, intriguing.
It seems the price will be to steep to play for the Kyrous or Laughtons. Focus more on a depth player, with the ability to put the puck in the net. Frederic seems like he fits the bill, and added toughness could only be advantageous down the stretch.
