2024 in review
Suarez is from Venuzuela and the Detroit Tigers signed him as an amateur free agent in 2008. He made his MLB debut in June of 2014 for the Tigers. He made an out in his only at bat. Suarez was 22 and Miguel Cabrera, was was 11 seasons into a HOF career and the raining back to back AL MVP was his team mate. I can imagine Suarez idolozing his fellow countryman. Suarez’ first start in the field came a few days later as a shortstop. Most of his appearances in 2014 and 2015 with the Reds were at short.
During the offseason he was traded from Detroit to Cincinnati. He was a Red for 7 seasons and was an allstar for them in 2018. In March of 2022, he was traded to the Seattle Mariners. He put up a 3.9 WAR season in 2022, but fell a bit in 2023 with a 2.3 WAR season in 2023.
In November 2023, he was traded to the Diamondbacks for Seby Zavala and Carlos Vargas. Zavala is no longer with Seattle, signing with Boston a month ago. I believe Vargas is still in their organization.
This truly was a tale of two halves for Suarez. He struggled mightily through most of the first 3 months of the season. There was talk about the potential for him to get DFA’d. I am confident that if you told anyone on June 30th that Suarez would end up being the #6 rated player in Snakepit reviews you would have been laughed off the site.
In April, he was mediocre, batting .241 with 2 homers and 18 RBI. In May, he batted .172 with 2 HRs and 8 RBI in 96 plate appearances. He struck out 29 times. The month of June was more of the same. In 93 plate appearances, he batted .156 with 2 HRs and 6 RBI and struck out 29 times. All told for these months, he played in 80 games, 315 plate appearances, hit 6 HRs, drove in 32 and slashed .196/.279/.312. He struck out 92 times, to 27 walks.
As the calendar turned to July, he started it off hitting safely in 5 of his first 6 games and had a 5 RBI night against the Padres. The first of four games he had 5 RBI this season. In the month of July he hit 10 home runs, drove in 27 and slashed .333/.398/.733. he struck out 26 times and had 10 walks in 103 PAs.
In August, he went down a bit, but not by much. He batted .260 and had 5 HRs with 24 RBI.
September he surged again, including a stretch where he had 12 hits in 5 games, including 4 homers. He hit 9 home runs and had 18 RBI with a slash line of .347/.385/.644.
From July 2nd, to September 29th, he played 78 games and had 325 plate appearances. Suarez hit 24 home runs and had 69 RBI and slashed .312/.357/.617. He struck out 84 times to 22 walks. He also doubled 18 times.
One of Suarez’ memorable moments this season came in the wild 11-10 walkoff win against Milwaukee on 9/15.
