It’s the most wonderful non-event of the year
The Superb Owl has flown away, marking the end of the NFL season, and freeing up space and attention for baseball once more. One of the joys of living in Arizona, is that our baseball season gets an extra month on each end, between spring training and the Arizona Fall League, and the former officially got under way today. Not that much happened, because the important word is “report”. Activity at Salt River Fields was largely notable by its absence, with the real action not coming until February 17th, when the first full squad workouts take place. Then we still have to wait four more days for the opening game of spring, against our Colorado housemates on February 21st.

But today, saw actual ball-players doing actual things with baseballs! And after months spent staring out the window and waiting for spring, while trying to ignore the Dodgers, this is certainly an improvement. Not everyone was in attendance today though: the term “report” is a loose one, with a phone-call to say, “Yes, I’m in town” being deemed adequate for the purposes of the exercise. Things should start to ramp up over the next few days, and we’ll get a look at all the players, as they arrive at camp in the best shape of their lives (TM). I’m looking at you, Jordan Montgomery… And, lo, it appears to be true!

That’s just one of the many cliches you can expect to hear over the next six weeks. Below, find a bingo card – cross them off as you hear or read them!
