Allowing 23 runs in an afternoon = suboptimal
Record: 13-12-1. Change on 2024: +3. Five inning result: 14-10-2.
Ryne Nelson may have lost the fifth starter battle after an ugly outing against the Royals in Surprise as the D-backs lost 12-1. He allowed eleven hits over three innings, leading to nine runs, eight earned. He walked none and had one strikeout. There were scoreless innings from Ryan Thompson, Justin Martinez and Drey Jameson. Not much to report on the offensive side either. Arizona had seven hits, and Kevin Graham got the only walk in addition to his hit, though did make an error. Ildemaro Vargas drove in Diamondbacks only run, with a sixth inning groundout.
At Salt River Fields, things were better, despite the 11-5 defeat. Indeed, Arizona actually led 5-4 before an ugly ninth in which LA scored seven off Edgar Isea and Zachary Barnes. Merrill Kelly scattered six hits over 2.2 innings, but walked none and struck out four. Joe Mantiply threw a pair of scoreless innings and A.J. Puk posted zero, while Shelby Miller allowed a run in two frames, but also had four K’s. Corbin Carroll got a triple and a single, while Josh Naylor reached safely three times, with a double and two walks, and also stole a base. Trey Mancini and Jose Herrera had two hits apiece.
Off-day for the D-backs tomorrow. Play resumes on Wednesday, with what’s scheduled to be a Jordan Montgomery start. So there’s that!
