Zac’s back!
Roster move
The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster move:
- Reinstated RHP Zac Gallen from the 10-day injured list (strained right hamstring).
Well, between this and the return of Madison Bumgarner, the Diamondbacks’ rotation is looking as injury-free as it has done in a long time. Luke Weaver is about the only member of what would have been consider our “best” rotation pre-season, that is still not about. Weaver, incidentally, is scheduled to throw off the mound today, for the first time since he was shut down on May 16 with a rotator cuff strain. However, as you’ll see below, there is a possibility that, when he does return, it may not be as you might expect. But I’ll not steal any of Jack’s thunder, you can see full details about Luke below.
But if there’s going to be any kind of rebound in the second half – even a dead-cat kind of one – it’s going to start with the Arizona rotation. So, let’s see what Gallen does; hopefully, it’s along the lines of what MadBum did last night.
Torey Lovullo notes
Stephen Vogt Trade. Vogt found out about the trade during the game last night and left the dugout mid game. Torey and Stephen got to speak briefly afterwards. He’s happy for Stephen to be able to go to an organization that is headed in a different direction . He aand Vogt have spoken many times in the past about his future as a coach and/or manager in the future but as long as the fire burns within to compete he should play as long as possible.
Zac Gallen is more stretched out than he was last time he came off the IL, but he will still be on a pitch count today.
Torey would not offer next steps for Taylor Widener and when he might be recalled to start. [Smart Money is on one of the first two games of the Pirates series]
Tyler Clippard threw a one inning, 26 pitch rehab outing in Reno last night. He gave up a two run homer but the runs were unearned. He struck out three.
Luke Weaver threw a bullpen yesterday and has embarked on the next phase of his throwing program. I asked Torey if they intended to stretch him out as a starter or bring him back as a reliever for the remainder of the year to protect him. He joked that I must have been sitting in the room this morning. (I wasn’t…haha)
“We just had that discussion this morning, we don’t know that answer. We obviously want Luke to be back here. He’s a major league pitcher with major league stuff. We love how he can impact the game in different ways. We don’t know. We just want to get him back here as soon as possible when he’s healthy. Where that takes us and how that lands him in the bullpen or in the rotation we’re not sure. We’re having those discussions right now. “
