Win some, lose some…
Record: 6-7-1. Change on 2024: -0.5. Five inning result: 8-5-1.
In Goodyear, Arizona were beaten 4-0 by Cleveland. However, three of the four runs were charged to Gerardo Gutierrez, as he tried to mop up in the third after Ryne Nelson left. Our starter went 2.1 innings, allowing a run on three hits, with no walks and three K’s. Cristian Mena and Christian Montes de Oca combined for six strikeouts over 3.2 scoreless innings. Not much offense to speak of here, obviously: a total of five hits and three walks with a whopping 15 K’s. Jake McCarthy had a hit and a walk, and Trey Mancini the only XBH for Arizona, a double, but also whiffed three times.
Things went much better at Salt River, where the D-backs reached a spring high for runs in an 11-4 victory over the Mariners. Their tallies all came after Merrill Kelly allowed two runs in 2.1 innings, on four hits, two walks and three K’s. A four-run second, including a two-run single by Garrett Hampson (above), got Arizona back in front. They then blew the game open with a seven-run seventh, sending 13 to the plate. Ketel Marte got three hits, with two apiece for Hampson, Josh Naylor and Jordan Lawlar (including an RBI triple, below). Yilber Diaz tossed two hitless frames with two walks and two strikeouts, and there were also scoreless innings for Ryan Thompson and Drey Jameson.
Tomorrow, it’s back to just the one game, and day baseball as well. The D-backs travel to Tempe Diablo to face the Angels. Zac Gallen will start, with a 1:10 pm first pitch.
