As many hits as errors for the D-backs this afternoon
Record: 1-4. Change on 2024: -1. Five inning result: 2-2-1.
I’m sure manager Torey Lovullo will have something to say following the game this afternoon, as the D-backs were held to only four hits. Perhaps worse, they also made four errors, leading to a pair of unearned runs which proved to be the margin of defeat against Chicago at Sloan Park. On the other hand, we got to see the A-bullpen for the first time, and they looked pretty good. Joe Mantiply, Kevin Ginkel, A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez pitched the first four innings and no-hit the Cubs collectively into the fifth, allowing just two walks while striking out six. Ginkel and Puk each fanned two of the three batters they faced, putting up 1-2-3 innings.
Kyle Nelson struggled in the fifth, however, allowing three hits, two of which left the park. Two errors on one play then let Chicago take the lead in the sixth. Pete Crow-Armstrong stole second, took third on a bad throw by Rene Pinto, then came home as center fielder Cristian Pache… um, did something. A fielder error by Connor Kaiser helped lead to an insurance run in the eighth, with Grae Kessinger also making a gaffe. Geraldo Perdomo had got Arizona on the board in the second with a solo homer, and scored our second run in the fifth, on a groundout by Kaiser. Ildemaro Vargas had half of the team four hits, with the other going to Josh Naylor.
Tomorrow, it’s back to Salt River Fields, where the team welcomes the Milwaukee Brewers. Corbin Burnes will make his second start of the season, with Bryce Jarvis and Drey Jameson also scheduled to pitch. First pitch is 1:10 pm.
