This is the only time the D-backs will see the Dodgers this spring, with Los Angeles shortly about to head off to Japan. They won’t have got much Intel from today’s game, with Arizona using a lot of B-squad pitchers. John Curtiss got the start and allowed two runs on three hits and a walk, being lifted after two outs and 27 pitches. Drey Jameson did pitch, and allowed a run in the second, but hit 101.3 mph against Shohei Ohtani. Bryce Jarvis looked good in the third striking out Will Smith, Miguel Rojas and Andy Pages, around a walk. Scott McGough then K’d Ohtani, Tommy Edman and Freddie Freeman in the fourth.
On offense, the Diamondbacks were held to two runs on five hits and one walk. Gabriel Moreno had two hits, including his second home-run of spring in the sixth. Moreno had already scored the D-backs’ opening run, coming home on an Ildemaro Vargas groundout. LuJames Groover, reassigned to minor league camp earlier in the day, seemed to take it personally, getting a hit and Arizona’s only walk. They struck out 11 times, but overall in spring, their K:BB ratio is 165:67, which is okay. Today, the bottom of the order got carved up, with Connor Kaiser and Kevin Graham combining to go 0-for-5 with five strikeouts.
Tomorrow, the team is back at Salt River Fields, where they take on the Kansas City Royals. Merrill Kelly is the scheduled starter, with a 1:10 pm first pitch.
