Another day, another meaningless defeat
Record: 0-3. Change on 2024: -2. Five inning result: 1-2.
The D-backs still find themselves looking for their first win of 2025, and this was probably the ugliest one yet. Only four runs scored in garbage time by the D-backs made the final score look somewhat respectable/ Neither the pitching nor the hitting were up to much, and through three games, Arizona have now been outscored by sixteen runs, the staff having conceded a total of 32 runs through 25 innings of work. Of course, we have hardly seen anyone on the mound with more than a slight chance of making the Opening Day roster. But if this is any guide (and it may well not be), then the team may struggle with pitching depth.
Today, Tommy Henry got the start, and after a zero in the first, was only able to get one out in the second, being charged with four earned runs, as the Mariners put up a six-spot. The only other name casual fans might recognize pitching today was Scott McGough, who allowed two runs in the third. That made the score 8-1 to Seattle after three, so you’ll understand why most people found something else to do. Arizona had taken the lead, on an Ildemaro Vargas RBI single in the second. But they didn’t score again until the eighth inning. Jack Hurley had a two-run single, with Tim Tawa and Gavin Conticello adding RBI in the ninth. All three of those men had a hit and a walk, while Josh Naylor got two hits.
The D-backs will seek to get into the win column tomorrow. They will be playing the Guardians back at Salt River Fields, and we’ll see Zac Gallen on the mound for the first time. It’s a 1:10 pm first pitch.
