Both Nelsons threw for the Snakes and were aided in their efforts by Pavin’s first bomb of Spring.
The Diamondbacks prevailed late in the contest against the Not-yet-Vegas Athletics. Through six innings, the game was tied at 2 before the benches emptied and the game was decided on a few runs scraped together by the D-backs youngsters in the 8th and 9th frames.
On the mound, fans were treated to the Full Nelson experience today. Ryne Nelson got the start, looking sharp and efficient in his 3 2⁄3 innings of work. Ryne tallied 1 strikeout and gave up a a solo homer in the third as the only blemish on his otherwise clean scorecard. After Ryan Thompson came in to get one out to complete the fourth, Kyle Nelson came in for the fifth and got touched for the second Athletics run of the afternoon. Nelson gave up a hard hit double to leadoff the inning, then that runner advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw from Nelson (the first of two pickoff errors in back-to-back innings by the Snakes) before coming in to score on a bloop single. The rest of the day’s pitching was handled by Yilber Diaz (2 1⁄3 IP, 0 R, 1 H), Jake Rice and Juan Morillo.
At the plate, the D-backs had a mostly MLB starting lineup, though likely not an Opening Day preview. Pavin Smith started at first base and got his first Spring homer. Ketel Marte added an RBI double, but had an otherwise forgettable day at the plate with a couple punch outs. A Barrosa double and Perdomo single were the only other hits among expected contributors to the 2025 club. Jose Herrera was back in the lineup after an injury scare a couple days ago, so that was good to see.
Tomorrow, the Diamondbacks head to Peoria for a night game against the Mariners. Cristian Mena is the probable starter on the Snakes’ side and there should be a video feed of the contest according to MLB so if you have nothing else going on Thursday night, swing by and join the GDT here on the Pit and enjoy the game.
