The Arizona Diamondbacks continue to build for the future with three recent signings of homegrown talent. Since the middle of February, the team has extended contracts for 25-year-old shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, 23-year-old reliever Justin Martinez, and 26-year-old starter Brandon Pfaadt.
Diamondbacks Building for Future with Recent Extensions
For Perdomo
Perdomo will receive $2.55 million this year after being eligible for salary arbitration for the first time. He then agreed to a four-year deal worth $45 million with a club option that will begin in 2026. Included in the deal is a club choice for 2030. In his three years with the big-league club, he is recognized as the leader of the infield.

Surprise Extension for Martinez
It was a surprise that the Diamondbacks extended Martinez, who saw action as a closer last season. A one-year contract was agreed upon on March 11, with a salary of $772,200 in the major leagues and $335,700 in the minors. Then, on March 22, he agreed to an $18 million, five-year contract that keeps him a Diamondback until 2031. Manager Torey Lovullo has mentioned he will use a closer by situation. However, it is believed that once Martinez gets more MLB experience, he will be the full-time closer.
Another Signing
Then this past Friday, Pfaadt agreed to a new deal. The five-year extension is worth $45 million. It includes a $21 million club option for 2031 and a $25 million mutual option for 2032, with a no-trade clause for 2030 through 2032. Although he is not considered an overpowering starter, Pfaadt did lead the Diamondbacks in innings pitched last season.
Not the First Time
The Diamondbacks have done this type of thing before. Back in 2018, the Diamondbacks extended Ketel Marte to a five-year extension. Then in 2022, he agreed to a five-year extension with a club option for 2028. This approach has proven to be effective. Marte has established a solid career and won his first Silver Slugger Award in 2024.
Corbin Carroll
After playing in only 32 games in 2022, the Diamondbacks offered Corbin Carroll an eight-year contract going into the 2023 season. The deal, worth $111 million, now appears to be an excellent investment. The fan favorite won the 2023 NL Rookie of the Year and then overcame a miserable start to 2024 to finish with decent numbers in the second half.
Assurance Within the Roster
These contracts provide some critical assurance for the Diamondbacks organization as it looks toward the future. Arizona made the deals hoping it could save money down the road. Additionally, it demonstrates belief and confidence in these players who have been developed through their farm system. They all continue to show their development and contribute to the club’s long-term success.
Keep the Core Together
The Diamondbacks want to keep a core of solid-performing players. They know their players better than anyone. But, they also know when they need to sign a big-name free agent. It was a momentous and surprising signing during free agency when Corbin Burnes joined this team. It certainly demonstrates the team’s commitment to winning by making such a bold move.
Decision to Spend
The Diamondbacks continue to build for the future. Their decision to increase payroll spending over the past few years has excited players and fans alike over the past few seasons, as well as for the future. They are stretching their budget by investing when there is an opportunity to get a significant return, with homegrown players or free agents. The Diamondbacks have the potential to be a championship team. Now, we will see how it works out.
