Time for Gallen to be the ace we need.
Roster moves
The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster moves. The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 39.
- Recalled from Triple-A Reno: LHP Blake Walston
- Reinstated from 10-day injured list: C Gabriel Moreno (strained left adductor)
- Designated for Assignment: RHP Dylan Floro
- Placed on 15-day injured list: RHP Paul Sewald (left neck discomfort; retroactive to Sept. 12)
Dylan Floro came over from the Nationals at the deadline, in a trade for 1B prospect Andres Chaparro. However, he struggled badly to replicate the form he had with Washington, pitching to 9.37 ERA over 16.1 innings of work. Walston made three appearances for the D-backs, two of them starts, earlier in the season, posting a 2.84 ERA over 12.2 innings, though his FIP is considerably higher at 4.28. The return of Moreno was a late change – so late, it came after I took the screenshot above, which is why Sewald is still present! The team looks to be opting to carry three catchers for now. A little surprised Moreno, if fit, is not in the line-up this afternoon, but there you go.
Someone else missing from the dugout today will be Torey Lovullo, since he is off attending a memorial service for Billy Bean. Bench coach Jeff Bannister will be taking charge in Torey’s absence, for a game which, if not a must-win, qualifies as a “certainly would be very nice to win”. Elsewhere, the Phillies and Mets are scoreless after seven at the time of writing, so we’ll be hoping Philadelphia can prevail there. San Diego start against San Francisco at about the same time as this game will get under way, while the Braves will be the Sunday night game on ESPN, so won’t be starting until 4:10 pm Arizona time. Hopefully, all today’s results will go better than the last couple have, by and large!
