Roster moves
The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster moves. The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 38.
- Reinstated from 10-day injured list: OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (strained left calf)
- Designated for Assignment: INF Luis Guillorme
Stop me if I’m wrong, but this might be the closest the D-backs have been all year to what would have seemed an “optimal” roster before the season started. The only current, sure-fire absentee from what you’d perhaps call our best 26 men on Opening Day, is Paul Sewald. Drey Jameson, Bryce Jarvis and both of the Nelsons, Ryne and Kyle, are still on the IL, of course. The Nelsons and Jarvis were on the roster for Opening Day. But you could argue whether Ryne Nelson in particular would have made a fully healthy squad for the D-backs at the start of the season. Sewald was also on the IL at the beginning of the year, so that’s a spot which went to someone else instead.
The departure of Guillorme is no great surprise. He actually had good plate discipline, drawing more walks (11) than strikeouts (8) over 49 PA. He’s the first D-back to do that in a season over more than a dozen PAs since Conor Jackson (20:18 during 170 PA) in 2010. But that eye still only led to a triple-slash line for Luis of .162/.347/.216, for a .563 OPS. Although he served a purpose when Ketel Marte was out, even with roster expansion, his time here seemed to be expiring after Ketel returned. I imagine he may well make it through waivers, especially since he won’t be playoff eligible anywhere else. He might want to hang around Arizona rather than elect to become a free agent, just in case.
