No pre-game scoreboard watching, however.
Well, you thought the possible scenarios were complex already… In case you missed it, the games today and tomorrow between our closest rivals for a wild-card spot, the Mets and the Braves, have been called off. The imminent arrival of Hurricane Helene will make it impossible for the games to take part in Atlanta, so they have been rescheduled if needed, as a double-header for Monday. They may not take place, if they are not needed, but from what I can see it would take some particularly odd set of results over the weekend, for the games to have no impact on post-season slots and/or seeding. But it does mean that the D-backs may not know their fate until 24 hours after they play their final game.
The best way to avoid that is, of course, win out. If Arizona goes four straight, they’ll end at 91 wins, and because they play each other, there’s no scenario where both the Braves AND Mets can reach that. Of course, easier said than done, especially if the Padres (our opponents over the weekend) are still in the division hunt. If they are not, San Diego may rest key players for that series, so I may be in the very odd position this evening of actually cheering for Los Angeles… Desperate times. 🙂 As ever, the best thing is for the D-backs to take care of their own business, something they have singularly failed to do of late. We could certainly do with seeing 2022 vintage Zac Gallen on the mound tonight.
