Everyone else gets to stick around
The Arizona Diamondbacks have tendered contracts to 29 players:
Tendered contracts to 8 arbitration-eligible players: RHP Zac Gallen, RHP Kevin Ginkel, LHP Joe Mantiply, LHP Kyle Nelson, INF Geraldo Perdomo, LHP A.J. Puk, INF/OF Pavin Smith and RHP Ryan Thompson.
Non-tendered LHP Brandon Hughes.
The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 36.
That’s the official word from the team, and is largely in line with what was expected. Kyle Nelson was on the MLB Trade Rumors list as a possible candidate, but those a little more up to speed on the team specifics thought that was unlikely. He missed basically the entire season after Thoracic Outlet Surgery, but unless there had been some major setback of which we were unaware, the team would want to see what he can do when he comes back healthy.
ish95 wrote about Brandon Hughes earlier in our series of player reviews. There’s not much more to add: his performance at the big-league level was underwhelming, though his AAA numbers were much better. The review concluded, “That he went unclaimed in September suggests demand for his services is low, and the team could try and outright him off the roster once more.” Less than a week later, here we are. We will see if the team looks to get Hughes back on a minor-league deal. Otherwise, his place in D-backs history will be starting the bee delay game. Meanwhile, everyone else will move on to the next phase of the arbitration process.
