The Arizona Diamondbacks have made the decision to move left-hander Jordan Montgomery from their starting rotation to the bullpen. The decision comes after a challenging 2024 season and an underwhelming spring, despite Montgomery’s large $22.5 million salary, which is the second-highest on the team. With Brandon Pfaadt securing the final rotation spot, Montgomery’s role on the team is called into question. Pfaadt’s superior spring performance, including consistency in his velocity and pitch movement, makes him a safer choice for the rotation. Meanwhile, right-hander Ryne Nelson, another strong performer from last season, is also being shifted to the bullpen.
The Diamondbacks explored trade options for Montgomery over the offseason. They have continued to discuss him with rival clubs in recent days. General manager Mike Hazen confirmed last week that he has been fielding calls about his team’s rotation depth. According to a source cited by Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, Arizona has asked at least one team to take on $13 million of Montgomery’s salary this year.
Diamondbacks Eye Trade Partner for Jordan Montgomery
Taking on $13 million of Montgomery’s salary is a high risk, but it suggests the Diamondbacks still have high expectations for him. Montgomery is mainly available after his horrendous 2024 season. He went unsigned until right before Opening Day and never got into a good rhythm on the mound. Montgomery performed so poorly that he was moved to the bullpen, finishing the year with a 6.17 ERA in 117 innings. Owner Ken Kendrick publicly slammed the signing, blaming himself since he encouraged the front office to sign Montgomery.
Optimism From Manager
Despite the move, manager Torey Lovullo remains optimistic. He expressed confidence in Montgomery’s potential to contribute out of the bullpen, citing a positive work ethic and strong mentality for improvement.
“I think you guys haven’t seen the best of Monty,” Lovullo said. “That’s my gut feel. I’m watching every bullpen. I’m watching all the things that he’s doing. He’s working his butt off.”
Montgomery made three outings this spring and has shown improvement in each. After getting hit hard in an outing in Goodyear, he threw well on the backfields, then threw well again against the Colorado Rockies at Salt River Fields on Wednesday.
Pitching coach Brian Kaplan is also optimistic about Montgomery’s process. Kaplan noted that Montgomery has been refining his mechanics and has shown marked improvement. Lovullo and Kaplan are hopeful Montgomery can find success in a new role.
The Risk and Reward of the Move
The Diamondbacks’ management decided to avoid making another costly mistake. With the team having narrowly missed out on the postseason last year, the decision represents an effort to reduce risk and strategically improve the bullpen. While the the Diamondbacks remain hopeful that with more time and a new role, Montgomery could regain his value and help contribute to the team’s success in a tough National League West division.
