It’s understandable if D-backs fans have a kneejerk reaction to the sight of Shelby Miller’s name in the line-up card. After all, he was part of what has to be considered among the worst trades in Diamondbacks history, and was terrible here (5-18, 6.35 ERA and -1.1 bWAR). But two years ago, he had a 1.71 ERA across 36 appearances out of the Dodgers bullpen, though admittedly regressed to a sub-average 4.53 with the Tigers last season. It’s likely nothing: since the start of 2018, Miller has a 5.84 ERA. But he wouldn’t be here if the front office didn’t see something of potential value. It’d be silly to ignore that on the basis of fan PTSD. That said… I’d be surprised if we end up writing anything but “Told you so!”
