That’s an improvement of three spots from last year
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno ranked seventh on MLB Now’s Top 10 Catchers Right Now last night. The 2023 Gold Glove Award winner, who ranked 10th on the Top 10 Catchers Right Now countdown last year, finished one spot ahead of All-Star Alejando Kirk of the Toronto Blue Jays and one spot behind the Houston Astros’ Yainer Diaz. Here’s what the program had to say about Moreno.
It’s interesting to see him ranked just ahead of Kirk, because part of the purpose of trading Moreno from Toronto was because he was seen as blocked by Kirk… This ranking suggests they might have been better off flipping the script. Anyway, the complete ranking for MLB Now’s top-10 catchers is as follows:
- William Contreras, Milwaukee Brewers
- Adley Rutschman, Baltimore Orioles
- Will Smith, Los Angeles Dodgers
- Cal Raleigh, Seattle Mariners
- J.T. Realmuto, Philadelphia Phillies
- Yainer Diaz, Houston Astros
- Gabriel Moreno, Arizona Diamondbacks
- Alejandro Kirk, Toronto Blue Jays
- Sean Murphy, Atlanta Braves
- Austin Wells, New York Yankees
What do you reckon?
Hosted by MLB Network’s Brian Kenny, the 15th season of each Top 10 Right Now ranking considers player performance over multiple seasons, offensive and defensive metrics, both advanced Statcast data and traditional numbers, and expert analysis by the MLB Network research team. Tonight, they’ll be moving on to starting pitchers: I wonder if new D-back Corbin Burnes will make the list?
