The extensions just keep coming…
Shout-out to Mike Rodriguez, who continued a sterling run of breaking news regarding Latino players of late. He was first with the news of the Geraldo Perdomo extension, and also (albeit much less happily!) the Jurickson Profar suspension. Last night, he Tweeted that “Ketel Marte and his Arizona Diamondbacks team are working on a contract extension worth over $100 million.” His sources prove to be spot on – though it looks like Mike isn’t really able to enjoy the news, since he’s currently in hospital, getting polyps removed from his colon. Get well soon, Mike.
The contract extension was confirmed about an hour ago by Nick Piecoro, who confirmed the new extension runs through 2031, and is worth $116.5m. Somewhat over half of that ($64m) was new money, because Ketel was originally under team control through the end of 2027, due to his previous extension. Nick then followed up with the following breakdown of what Ketel is due under the new contract. I’ve added in brackets what the existing contract would have paid Marte:
- 2025: $14M ($16.6M)
- 2026: $15M ($16.6M)
- 2027: $12M ($14.6M)
- 2028: $20M ($13M team option, $3M buyout)
- 2029: $22M
- 2030: $22M
- 2031: $11.5M player option
Based on the above, it’s actually a little cheaper this year in next, then a surprisingly cheap 2027, before escalating for the three seasons beyond that. It adds Marte to an increasingly long list of D-backs who will be under team control through at least 2030. It also includes Corbin Burnes, Corbin Carroll, Geraldo Perdomo and Justin Martinez.
