Though most fans don’t seem to care.
Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across MLB. Each week, we send out questions to the most plugged-in Arizona Diamondbacks fans, and fans across the country. Sign up here to join Reacts.
According to the latest SB Nation Reacts survey, 14 percent of Diamondbacks fans are confident the team is headed in the right direction. That’s up from five percent the last three weeks. More than double! It’s amazing what a series win can do for confidence, apparently… We’ll see how long that lasts.
As the team nears the midseason break, MLB hopes fan attention turns to All-Star Week. However, fewer than half of baseball fans said they care about the All-Star Game. What, you mean the ridiculous spectacle of a Home-Run Derby at Coors Field with un-humidored baseballs, doesn’t get you enthralled? This year, in particular, I find myself with the majority. I’ll be paying considerably more attention to the draft, which for the first time has been scheduled to take place in conjunction with the All-Star Game. This is partly because the future of the Diamondbacks is considerably more appealing than their present.
On top of that, only a slight majority of fans even want their team’s star player to participate in All-Star events, instead of taking that time to rest for the second half of the season. Here, for obvious reasons, I am not exactly bothered. Whatever Eduardo Escobar wants to do from Monday through Thursday this week, is hardly going to make or break Arizona’s season. To be frank, he’s likely only a “pity All-Star,” there simply because the rules dictate every team has to have one.
The rosters for both the NL and AL teams have been set. But even after the votes were counted and the rosters completed, fans still aren’t convinced the right players were picked. According to the survey, Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer was the biggest roster snub, earning 39 percent of the vote. Padres third baseman Manny Machado took the next highest percentage of votes with 20 percent.
On the other end of the spectrum, another pitcher was picked as the All-Star player least deserving of the roster spot. Yankees reliever Aroldis Chapman was picked by 44 percent of fans as being the biggest roster surprise.
Whether the right players were selected or not, a slight majority of fans believe the American League will win the Midsummer Classic. The AL took 52 percent of the vote.
