From 1999 through 2023, how many can you name?
First, let’s take a look at our Sporcle from two weeks ago, when we challenged you to name all the 51 players who appeared for Arizona this season. Eighty-four of you took up the challenge, and most of you achieved solid success with an average score of 64%. Eight of you managed to get them all, but the biggest group (19%) were in the 36-40 range. It was clear that you remembered the position players much better than the pitchers. Ten people were remembered by 85% or better of participants, but only one was a pitcher, Zac Gallen. Gabriel Moreno was top, missed by only two people. At the other end, the bottom ten were all pitchers, with Matt Bowman the most forgotten, named by only fifteen percent.
This time, we look at the post-season for the D-backs. Since they first made the playoffs in 1999, sixty position players have started a post-season game with Arizona [we’ll get to the pitchers down the road]. This Sporcle challenges you to name them. While there should not be any problems with the 2023 crowd, or probably even 2017, going back before that might be a little challenging. So I’ve given you the player’s initials as a clue. But even there, I suspect we may well find a couple fall into the “What? They played for the D-backs?” category, even though they were part of our playoff roster. As usual, last names only are needed, and I’ll set 30 as the target, which is half the players.
